Žleby lies in the Doubrava valley, about 18 km south-east of Kutná Hora and 7 km east of Čáslav. In 2025, it had approximately 1,429 residents.

The first written record of Žleby dates to 1278. Žleby Castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute, is open to the public and offers visitor tours along several routes. In the 19th century, Vincenc Karel Auersperg remodelled the castle in the English Gothic Revival style, and an English park lies beside it. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary originally dates to 1540 and was rebuilt in 1714 and 1775.
